22-year-old lock Matt Philip was called into the Road Safety Western Force squad in a training capacity last season after injuries hit the club’s second row stocks before making his debut off the bench against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein. The former Australian Schoolboys and Australian U20’s representative went on to earn three caps in a whirlwind maiden Super Rugby season and was rewarded with a full contract for the 2017 season. Standing at 199cm and weighing in at 115kg Philip is aggressive on contact, skilled with ball in hand and reliable option in the lineout. After plying his trade for Southland in New Zealand’s Mitre 10 Cup in the off-season Philip will look to establish himself as regular in the match-day 23 in 2017.
