Local boy’s dream come true
An emotional Brad Lacey described running onto the field for his debutant game at the Western Force as “unreal”.
“It was everything I hoped for and more, especially to be handed the cap now to be the 165th player to play for the Western Force is a dream come true,” Lacey said.
The 24-year-old moved back to Perth after a year-long stint with the Queensland Reds and Brisbane City to play for the Force.
Lacey struggled to find the words to describe the night after celebrating the win with Wolfmother in the change room.
“Record-breaking crowd at NIB stadium, it’s unbelievable. The feeling in the changing room and the feeling outside shows Perth really came together tonight,” he said.
Lacey described the team as “electric” when the final siren sounded.
“Fiji was unbelievable tonight, they came back and really fought to the death moment,” he said.
Flyhalf Andrew Deegan held high praise for the Fijian team, particularly in the second half.
Former playmaker for Connacht in Ireland, Deegan said the crowd motivated the team to bring home the win.
“The crowd was outstanding and I don’t think I’ve played anything like that before. You could really hear every single one of them,” the 23-year-old said.
“Towards the back end there Fiji, credit to them, came back at us and then at our goal line that Force chant just pushed us over the line.”
Deegan complimented the Force’s determination and conviction in the weeks leading up to the match.
“Lots of boys have been working hard over pre-season,” the back liner said.
“Some boys have been here one month or two months, some have even been here a couple of weeks but we all had that focus for the first game against Fiji.”
Now that game one has finished, the boys are turning their attention to the upcoming game against Tonga on Sunday, May 13.
New recruit Deegan says the next games are the Force’s chance to back-up the success they’ve had against Fiji.
“It’s very easy to get up in the first game, there’s a lot of hype around it,” Deegan says.
“But if it’s anything like tonight, were in good stead.”
