Beyond the field: Angus Wagner
New recruit Angus Wagner is settling into his new home in the West and enjoying the support and camaraderie amongst his new teammates.
A budding cricketer and a big fan of Jack Black, the newcomer can’t wait to get stuck into the 2020 Global Rapid Rugby season!
“It has been awesome, the boys have really welcomed me along and put me under a bit of pressure in training so I am loving it,” Wagner said.
After the 2019 Super season, the 22-year old had a standout NRC campaign for the Canberra Vikings. Although he admits it has been a challenge to watch highlights of the Grand Final at first, he is raring to put on the blue and black for the Force.
“It was weird at the start seeing the highlights videos of the Vikings getting destroyed in the finals and I didn’t know how to feel for the last week but it’s starting to feel more like it’s my team,” Wagner said.
“Even the first (Canberra) game here, my first day of being signed, everyone was so welcoming around the whole rugby vibe. I am really liking the support we are getting from the Sea of Blue.”

What are you looking forward to in 2020?
Definitely the new competition! It looks really fast and I am pretty keen to get my weight down and get stuck into a bit faster footy.
Earliest rugby memory?
Playing rugby in Toomba in the U8s and my dad was the coach and I don’t think we could play contact until U10s. I was a pretty big kid back then and dad bumped me up to U10s and gave me a go. I actually came from league and all the parents were complaining that I was too big when I was actually two years younger than everyone.
Who is your inspiration?
My old man for sure. We like similar things and are both into our business and rugby so most of our conversations are filled with that sort of stuff.
Which position would you play if not the one you currently play?
I wouldn’t mind going to inside centre. I am probably a bit big now but I played there a bit growing up. I’ve got a bit of both sides of the position with the crash ball and the silky skills.
What’s something not many people know about you?
I am a pretty handy cricketer. I got Senior Cricketer of the Year in my final year at Anglican Church Grammar School in Queensland. I wasn’t actually there for the awards ceremony because I didn’t think I’d get it. And then I had all these text messages from all my cricketing mates asking where I was when they handed out the trophy. If I hadn’t pursued rugby I would like to have pursued that sport.
Favourite player to watch growing up?
Richie McCaw, definitely 100%. He is the G.O.A.T.
What do you do when you’re not playing rugby?
At the moment I love going to the beach and going home to Theodore in Central Queensland when I can, I love having my own space out there.
If you weren’t a professional rugby player you would be?
A farmer for sure.
Favourite current Force player and why?
I am a bit new to the scene, but I’d have to say Fergus Lee-Warner. He is a pretty hard-working fella and I remember him in the 2019 NRC, he had plenty of carries and just worked incredibly hard.
If you could have a superpower it would be?
Being able to read minds to find out if I was being selected!
Snakes. I do not like them at all!
Who would play you in a movie about your life?
That’s a tough one but probably Jack Black. I think something like me in a Nacho Libre role nothing too serious would be good.
