Process

Selection Process

The RugbyWA Academy selection process is an extensive one. In essence the following processes usually take place. We have a number of scouts across Australia and we work closely with the schools and clubs in Western Australia in terms of identifying talent. In assessing prospective talent, areas looked at are rugby ability and game understanding, physical attributes and attitude!

  • Pathways- selected from NTS, Schools, WA U16s & Schoolboys, Interstate, Clubs.
  • Players coming in from interstate or internationally must be eligible for eventual Super 14 selection. In all cases, footage [a number of matches] not a highlights package will be viewed. Potential players will also be reference checked.
  • All players entering the program will be assessed in terms of areas of strength and conditioning.
  • Players need to understand that this is a period of minimal financial gain and one of sacrifice in terms of effort.
  • Player interview.

Players coming from outside WA

As said before, we have a close working relationship with our clubs. They will play a vital role in the long term success of the Emirates Western Force. A number of clubs have been willing to assist prospective players, academy players from interstate or overseas. In most cases this will vary from help with accommodation, to assisting in some form of study or work. In most case if one has not dealt directly with the club, usually a point of contact would be Mitch Hardy - General Manager, Rugby.

Academy Process and Progress

That will vary in terms of age, ability and performance. Most players will in future years enter the program as a 17/18 year old and would generally be in the Academy for a maximum period of 3 years. Not all players will complete the 3 year program. This of course depends on performance and development. The Academy system essentially is there to produce future Emirates Western Force Super 14 players - that is the bottom line. If players are deemed good enough, they will be offered either apprenticeship contracts or rookie contracts with the team. From here, players can progress to a full time contract with the professional team.

Remember, only those deemed good enough to be signed as a rookie/contracted player will be signed. That is the harsh reality of professional sport.
