RugbyWA is doing its part towards developing the next Taj Burrow and Layne Beachley through its association with Surfing Australia.
Junior surfers in the Perth metro area have been given the chance to improve their fitness in collaboration with RugbyWA in preparation for the 2012 Brownes Chill WA Junior Surfing Titles.
Under the guidance of RugbyWA Academy Strength and Conditioning Coach Louis Dallimore, the athletes have been using the Emirates Western Force’s world-class gym in Floreat twice a week since
April to prepare themselves physically for the challenge.
“We do a proper warm-up and during that we talk about things like nutrition and hydration,” Dallimore said.
“Hips and shoulders are the two main focus areas of their training, so we focus on lower-body strength for when they’re standing up and pushing with their legs, as well as upper-body strength for when they’re paddling.
“We also use the bikes, we do some flexibility work and then we do some exercises.”
The programs, designed by Dallimore and Surfing Australia’s Head of Strength and Conditioning, Dr
Jeremy Sheppard, provide the high performance surfers with an introduction to the types of training needed to further their development as athletes.
The final round of the competition will be held in Geraldton on 21-22 July.
